PurSteam Steam Mop
A practical steam mop (2-in-1 mop + handheld) for quick, chemical-free floor cleaning at home.
Wood floors are beautiful but sensitive to moisture, which makes steam mopping a risky choice. Here's what you need to know before pointing a steam mop at hardwood.
It's generally not recommended to use a steam mop on hardwood or engineered wood floors. Wood and moisture don't mix - steam can penetrate the finish and the seams, causing warping, cupping or dulling over time. Most wood-floor makers advise against it, and a barely-damp microfibre mop is the safer choice.
Wood expands when it takes on moisture and contracts as it dries. Forcing hot steam onto a wood floor can drive moisture through the finish and into the boards and joints, leading to swelling, cupping, gaps or a cloudy, damaged finish. The damage often shows up gradually and is hard to reverse.
Both are at risk. Solid wood can warp and cup; engineered wood has a real-wood top layer over a core that can also be damaged by moisture. Neither is designed to be steamed, and doing so may void the flooring warranty.
Sweep or vacuum regularly, then clean with a well-wrung, barely-damp microfibre mop and a cleaner made for wood floors. Wipe spills up promptly and avoid standing water. This keeps wood floors clean without the moisture risk of steam.
